Unit Description

The Experimental Therapeutics Unit has as main purposes:

  1. Research and development on innovative therapies for the treatment of chronic degenerative diseases that severely affect life quality.
  2. The apprenticeship of human resources of high-specialty in areas of:
  • Genetic engineering and molecular biology
  • Gene and cell therapy
  • Tissue engineering
  1. To provide service to public and private sectors, combining knowledge and techniques in genetic engineering, molecular biology, cell biology and biomaterial engineering.
  • Pharmaceuticals and in vitro and in vivo devices toxicity tests.
  • Pre-clinic essays management.
  • Evaluation of matrices and tissue engineering materials.
  • Transitory and permanent transfection of cell lines.
  • Production and purification of adenoviral and retroviral vectors.
  • Separation and insulation of cell lineages.
  • Hematopoietic.
  • Mesenchymal.
  • Immune system cell lineage.
  • Cell bank service.
  • Cryopreservation of cell lines.
  • Cell lines repository.
  • Training and courses on: cell culture, stem cells insulation, gene therapy, PCR and real time qPCR.

This unit annually greets national and international students through different exchange programs, with the goal of undertaking research stays, research summers, or social service on basic research.

This unit, through its researchers and students, support 5 main research areas:

  1. Molecular biology of cancer.
  2. Tissue engineering biomaterial development.
  3. Tissue regeneration cell therapy.
  4. Gene and cell therapy of cancer.

Additionally, this unit actively cooperates with public and private sectors to implement projects for the development of significant value products, aimed to solve health issues that society currently confronts. All of this through strategic relationships with the industry, under the premise of project funding via private and/or public sectors.

To perform said projects, this unit has:

  1. Total area of 256m² ( 2,755 ft²)
  2. Central laboratory of 144m² (1,550 ft²)

  1. Cell and tissue culture areas, 64m² (689 ft²)
  2. Inverted microscope and fluorescence area, 16 m² (172 ft²)
  3. Cryopreservation area, 16 m² (172 ft²)
